Join Us On Our Next Charity Swim?

Forty six swimmers turned out yesterday for the first of the Highland Open Water Swims. So far we've all raised more than £1400 for the Children with Cancer Charity. So that's all good then. The next swim is in fact a whole wheeled of swimming. The main swim on Saturday 22nd April when we'll swim 1.4km across Loch Sunart to the Resipole Campsite . Swimmers will be ferried across to the start point by safety RIB.

The Caledonia Way

The Caledonia Way is a somewhat unusual long distance cycling route. While it's mostly on minor roads, you can't ride the whole thing on a road bike. There are at least three sections where it heads into distinctly off-road territory. Not full mountain bike country, but rough enough to give anyone on a 23-25mm skinny tyre a hard time with skids and pinch flats. Touring 28mm and upwards would be fine. The other curious thing is that the National Cycling Network seems to dis-own a few sections. NCN78 signs are rare between Campbeltown and Oban, confined to the few off-road parts which aren't the Caledonian Canal towpath. If that wasn't confusing enough, at Fort William the Caledonia Way acquires a second name, and for part of this final section it's better known as the Great Glen Way. Where To Carry All That Stuff On A Triathlon Bike?

That's a serious question - where do you carry it all? Especially for middle and long course events in the UK and other parts of northern Europe. The weather can be less than perfect and try jamming a rain jacket into a tiny Tri-suit pocket! If you have any suggestions / thoughts / ideas please let me know in the comments. This is my Cervelo P2 rigged for training rides of 4-5 hours in duration around the Scottish Highlands. Actually, it has never been used for racing. Staffordhire IM70.3 will (probably) be its first race.

Hiking the Via Alpina West

In early September 2025, we booked a self-guided walking holiday with MacsAdventure in which our luggage was transported for us between hotels. We wanted a true mountain journey, rather than daily hikes from one or two locations, and the Via Alpina West looked like a genuine challenge. Twenty-five years ago, we hiked the Pacific Crest Trail , 2658 miles from Mexico to Canada, but recently we haven’t carried big packs so we welcomed the idea of having our luggage transported between accommodations. Next year we hope to hike the Tour of Monte Rosa , for which we will have to carry all our stuff, so this was partly a shake-down trip to see how well our bodies performed. Nevertheless, we had a few concerns even after we booked this trip, principally, would it be too hard for us?
