The Caledonia Way

The Caledonia Way is a somewhat unusual long distance cycling route. While it's mostly on minor roads, you can't ride the whole thing on a road bike. There are at least three sections where it heads into distinctly off-road territory. Not full mountain bike country, but rough enough to give anyone on a 23-25mm skinny tyre a hard time with skids and pinch flats. Touring 28mm and upwards would be fine. The other curious thing is that the National Cycling Network seems to dis-own a few sections. NCN78 signs are rare between Campbeltown and Oban, confined to the few off-road parts which aren't the Caledonian Canal towpath. If that wasn't confusing enough, at Fort William the Caledonia Way acquires a second name, and for part of this final section it's better known as the Great Glen Way. T he walker's Great Glen Way (which can be ridden on an MTB) splits off and takes a different, rough, high route as it approaches ...

Where To Carry All That Stuff On A Triathlon Bike?

That's a serious question - where do you carry it all? Especially for middle and long course events in the UK and other parts of northern Europe. The weather can be less than perfect and try jamming a rain jacket into a tiny Tri-suit pocket! If you have any suggestions / thoughts / ideas please let me know in the comments. This is my Cervelo P2 rigged for training rides of 4-5 hours in duration around the Scottish Highlands. Actually, it has never been used for racing. Staffordhire IM70.3 will (probably) be its first race.

My Cycling Kit

Some of the links below are affiliate links which means I receive a small commission if you use them when buying, for which I thank you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. My compliance information explaining the basis on which I work with brands and conduct reviews is here BIKE My current go-anywhere bike is a Landrace Boxer, on long term loan from Cyclefit in exchange for shooting their videos. I first had a bike fit at Cyclefit, then the bike was built up to my precise, individual requirements. The whole process, and the comfort of the resulting bike, has been a revelation. I've already sold my Camino, and my Vielo V+1 and Fara might go the same way. The Boxer fits so well, I don't want to ride anything else! It has SRAM Eagle eTap drive-train, and because my old legs want to tour off-road, the rear 12-speed cassette is 10-52 with a 38T chainring. Tyres - mostly...

Keeping Cycling Data in Sync - Strava, FitBit and MyFitnessPal

Runners & cyclists record data from different devices, many of which won't 'talk' to each other. This is my system for keeping it all in sync with a separate back-up. If your chosen application isn't listed, don't despair because you'll find an idea in this which will probably work for you. Oh - and this could all change once the Apple Watch comes out. Check the date on this post - what I wrote in 2015 may no longer work! [Edit: I don't currently use this system. The FitBit and Garmin 220 are in a box somewhere and I record most things on a Garmin 920XT. I have stopped tracking my steps because my training load is heavier now for steps to be irrelevant, and I don't use MyFitnessPal because I'm on top of my diet. What's more, the interfaces between the different systems and websites described might have changed since this was written in March 2015. That said, it should all still wor - probably.] I have three 'sets' of de...

Hiking the Via Alpina West

In early September 2025, we booked a self-guided walking holiday with MacsAdventure in which our luggage was transported for us between hotels. We wanted a true mountain journey, rather than daily hikes from one or two locations, and the Via Alpina West looked like a genuine challenge. Twenty-five years ago, we hiked the Pacific Crest Trail , 2658 miles from Mexico to Canada, but recently we haven’t carried big packs so we welcomed the idea of having our luggage transported between accommodations. Next year we hope to hike the Tour of Monte Rosa , for which we will have to carry all our stuff, so this was partly a shake-down trip to see how well our bodies performed. Nevertheless, we had a few concerns even after we booked this trip, principally, would it be too hard for us? I also wondered whether the half-board food would be too “meaty” for us non-meat eaters, and whether incidentals in Switzerland , like buying snacks and drinks, would be prohibi...
